Swimming pools are an excellent feature to add to your home. They extend the range of activities you can do outdoors. They introduce a measure of style, elegance, and beauty to your property. And of course, swimming pools are indispensable for parties or simply entertaining guests.
But swimming pools don’t last forever. To get the most out of a pool, you must have a program for cleaning its water, maintaining chemical balance, and retaining the luster of the poolside and floor. However, even when you do these things, a day will still come when you have to overhaul the pool.
A pool may start to deteriorate due to its age and not necessarily because of neglect. Water is a powerful agent that will wear away or dissolve almost any material. Together with chlorine, salt, and organic matter, swimming pool water can slowly eat away the plaster in the swimming pool sides.
The result is that the plaster will etch and have stains. If this decline continues without maintenance, the swimming pool may lose its appeal, warns Advantage Realty. Even worse, the plaster may stop playing its role in preventing water from leaking through and damaging the structural shell of the pool.
That is why it is vital to detect the signs that swimming is ready for renovation. Being able to spot these, sometimes, minor indications can save you lots of money. However, even if your pool does not show these warning signs, you may still want to renovate it and update its style.
Signs that a swimming pool is due for renovation
- The plaster is peeling
The plaster in the swimming pool is what you see when you look into the water. It is what gives the pool its unique appearance. The plaster also serves as a protective barrier for the pool concrete or shell. When the pool plaster starts to peel off, it not only disfigures the pool and makes it unattractive; it also allows water to permeate the plaster and, possibly, damage the pool structural shell.
- Damaged vinyl pool liners
If a pool has vinyl liners and the liners start to show signs of wearing out, it is time to renovate it. Vinyl liners help to protect the walls and floors of a swimming pool. They are the pool’s first line of defense against mold, corrosion, and other damages. Ordinarily, vinyl liners should last 10-15 years, but many factors can interfere and shorten their lifespan. If the pool liners are starting to wear out, the pool is due for a facelift.
- Cracked walls
Cracks in the swimming pool wall are a sign of serious trouble. Your pool wall should not have cracks. If there are cracks in the wall, the pool’s structural integrity is compromised. Those cracks will only get worse with time, and the whole swimming pool may be in danger of collapsing. Cracks often happen as a result of neglecting smaller issues, like the ones listed above. Cracked swimming pool walls also allow water seepage, which leads to higher bills.
- Pockmarks in the pool surface
Divots appear on a pool surface when the plaster and underlying concrete shell have eroded significantly. This is a sign of advanced pool decay, and the damage will usually continue to spread until you do something about it. If a pool surface is showing pockmarks, a cosmetic solution will not solve the problem. The whole pool needs to be resurfaced after the pool concrete has been repaired. Delaying to do this could cost you the entire pool.
- Stains and blemishes
Two of the many things that can cause a pool’s surface to become stained are poor maintenance and unbalanced pool chemicals. These can allow bacteria to attach to the surfaces and stain them. But you can easily remedy this problem by washing the pool. Conversely, stains may also be a result of damage to the pool surface. Cracks on the surface will allow bacteria and algae to embed themselves in the plaster and stain it. If this is the cause of the discolorations, you need to renovate the pool.
- Safety issues and frequent repairs
There is a point where it is cheaper to renovate a swimming pool than to repair it. When the pool’s problem becomes too frequent, and the cost of fixing them gets ever higher, it may be time to revamp the pool. Additionally, if there are safety concerns around the pool, a renovation may be the best option. The cost of renovating the pool will be far less than the emotional trauma of any unfortunate incidents at the pool.
- The swimming pool is outdated
Perhaps the swimming pool has become too small for your family or for entertaining your guests. Or maybe the pool is old, and its style is horribly outdated. Or perhaps you want to upgrade some of the pool’s features and make it more energy-efficient. Or it could be that you want to update the pool’s safety and security with a more modern version. These are certainly enough reasons to renovate your swimming pool.
